Tico passed away on Tuesday. Tico was a true Nedervillian - always up for a powder day, long singletrack, a river trip, or just a ride in the back of a pickup. He was an escape artist, a wanderer and a total weirdo. He will be missed!

Dispatch from the Arctic, July 2014
Cruising through about 80N, 68E right now. Breaking ice and taking names. Been in the ice for nearly a day now. Before that it was about 3 days in the open ocean cruising out from Tromso, Norway. Airline lost my bag, so I don't have any of my stuff. Had to go and get a few clothes in Tromso, but it sucks not having the various nick-nacks. Imagine a 7 week trip (in a fairly extreme location) with only your carry on. I didn't even have long sleeves! Fricken airline was good about getting my bag back home to Gilpalachia at least.
Spent the last week getting all of our stuff running and adjusting to life on the ship. 4 person rooms lead to a cacophony of sounds at night. Well, that and the perpetual ship engine sounds, and a multi-beam radar that beeps all day, and the occasional shudder of the whole ship as we bash into ice. In spite of all this, I've been sleeping like a baby (on the upper bunk). The clouds have been great: Low overcast and fog nearly the whole time. That is exactly what I like to study.
Two bears today. One that we nearly ran over. I got some pretty good photos, but not nearly as nice as it would have been with the camera that was in my bag.... oh well. point-an-shoot still works. I've got a blog going, I think. I just send little snippets down and someone else loads them up to the blog. I've just sent a couple of photos, so hopefully those get posted in the next day or so. http://ciresblogs.colorado.edu/icebreaker/
Hope you guys are well. M
